The constellation of Cancer originates with the myth of The Twelve Labours of Heracles.
In mythology, the crab was sent by Hera to be a distraction to Hercules during a battle with a giant serpent creature.
Hercules refused to be messed with during the fight, so he kicked the Crab all the way to the stars.
Another version of this story says that Hercules crushed the crab under his foot. In honor of his valiant attempt at defeating Hercules, Hera placed the Crab among the stars for eternity.
However, because he failed in his quest, the Crab was placed in the dimmest part of the sky, where he would be remembered but not exalted.
